LIGHT AND SHADE

Photography by Shermin T (www.sherminT.net)

One of my most surprising and unexpected meetings of this year was definitely with the talented Shermin T. I remember one lazy Sunday afternoon whilst surfing (internet not with a board) to find inspiration for work. By total luck I tripped over Shermin's website: I stopped suddenly clicking the mouse and submerged myself within the creativity of his work. Sharp fashion images, beautiful cinematography and the expertly directed dramatic use of light and shade...I knew that I had to contact him. It was me this time that did the chasing!

With a Malaysian background, Shermin divides his time between London, Zurich and Kuala Lumpur. He is now in the last year of his architectural studies but his heart definitely skips a beat when it comes to fashion photography. I have no doubt a rising star: one to watch! Every time we discuss a project, his eyes are excited and brimming with passion, it is just so evident and infectious! I am so lucky to have "clicked on" and worked with this future big name in the world of fashion photography!

Through his lens, Shermin creates a new world, one I don't recognize... more dramatic, heightened and polished. It's like looking at a cubist still life, the artist sees something so far removed from the bowl of fruit the rest of us would just eat, let alone think about painting! The ability to not only see and capture a fleeting moment but heighten its beauty!

In these images I'm just the bowl of fruit! To complement the brutalist architectural background the two outfits are very graphic, layered and exquisitely detailed: Shermin manipulated the light and made poetry amongst the concrete... perhaps a true architect after all…
